January 22, 1931 - March 25, 2022
Yvonne M. Bassett (nee Griffin) of Gloucester Township, NJ Passed away on March 25, 2022, at the age of 91 years. Beloved wife of the late Leland H. Bassett, who predeceased her in 2016. Loving mother of Deborah Perretti, Celeste Clemons, Jeffrey Bassett, Steven Bassett Sr., Alan Bassett, Charles Bassett Sr., Melanie Bassett, Germaine Egrie, Matthew Bassett, the late Thomas Bassett, and the late Leland Bassett Jr. She was an immensely proud Grammie to 34 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren. She will be missed by her brothers, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends. Yvonne was born in Moira, NY on January 22, 1931. She attended a one room schoolhouse and continued to stay in touch with her classmates all her life. After graduating high school, she successfully completed a nursing course and received her certificate. Yvonne married Leland H. Bassett on November 26, 1949. She followed Leland all around the country with the US Air Force after his return from Korea. She supported Leland's lengthy career with the Boy Scouts of America, moving to several states as the family grew. She was a proud and dedicated lifelong homemaker. Yvonne will be remembered for her ability and willingness to express unconditional love to everyone. She taught us all by example, to give and to serve others. Yvonne was always busy writing to friends and family near and far. She enjoyed spending time with the Franciscan Friars in Graymoor, NY. She knew many of the priests and nuns from her childhood and stayed in touch. Yvonne was a devout Catholic and prayed for her loved ones daily. The Catholic Church supported the large family through the years and for that she was grateful. She was always busy sewing clothes and making costumes for the kids along the way. She thoroughly enjoyed crocheting and creating thousands of gifts including, afghans, sweaters, hats, mittens, dresses, her famous brownies, tomato macaroni soup and her “wuvable” Peanut butter sandwiches. She did leave several of her recipes that she loved to make and share when family came to visit. Yvonne loved crafting and created many of her cards and gifts that she loved to send to so many every week. Yvonne donated many of her hats and afghans to the sick and less fortunate. She was enormously proud of each of her sons and daughters. She talked about their many individual successes & accomplishments to whoever would listen. Services and interment for Yvonne will be held privately as per her request. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, PO Box 301, Garrison, NY 10524. She was eleven years my senior and was more a mother than a sister to me the first five years of my life. Somehow, she always seemed to see me as that innocent boy. Her love was unconditional and always present, no matter that I was undeserving. She helped instill a love of music in me. I remember listening to the radio with her as a small child while she wrote out notebooks full of lyrics to the popular songs of the day, especially of country tunes and most especially those of Hank Williams. She was my biggest fan, praised me endlessly and passed while listening to a loop of my recorded music that her son Alan and his soul mate Terri had playing in her room over the last few days of her life. I am forever humbled and thankful to them for that. I will always be grateful that she chose to only see the best in me, never the worst and that a part of me was with her when she left. If she can see me now, it is probably with greater clarity than ever before. I hope she won't be disappointed. I love you Yvonne, Phil *
