Richard S. Whitelock

April 27, 1935 - August 23, 2020

Richard S. Whitelock, longtime resident of Blackwood, NJ, passed away August 23, 2020 at the age of 85 years. Treasured son of the late Joseph Wojtylak and the late Mary Wojtylak (nee Szerlik). Devoted husband of Joan Whitelock (nee Foell). Beloved father of Jackie Foyil (Mark), Cheri Derrig (Bob), and Laurie Hopton (Dennis). Proud grandfather of Michael Derrig (Kristen), Kerri Sweeney (Shawn), Sean Foyil (Ponni), Aidan Hopton, Brady Hopton, and Molly Hopton; great-grandfather of Nolan Derrig and Joseph Sweeney. Dear brother of the late Joseph Wojtylak, the late Norman Wojtylak, and Ronald Wojtylak (Gloria). Loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by several godchildren. Rich was born in Philadelphia, PA. He was deeply proud of his Polish heritage. He worked for many years as a salesman in the steel industry. He served his country in the Army National Guard. He was a devoted Catholic and went fifty-one years without missing a weekly Mass. He served as the food and beverage director for the Antioch Retreats at St. Jude’s Church. Rich was also a longtime supporter of the Cathedral Kitchen. He was a long-standing Republican. Rich was a man who “to know him was to love him” and he knew just about everybody. Many friends and family described him as the “gold standard” of husband, father, family man, Catholic church member, and all-around human being. He was an exceptional father and grandfather and showed his never-ending support by being the first one in the stands at every sporting event, performance, and attending every sacrament. Never one to miss an opportunity to spend time with family and friends, he would host an annual Kentucky Derby party to share his love of horse racing with the people he loved most. He was also the host of an annual “crab cook” at his house and held the lofty title of “crab aficionado”. Rich loved the Jersey Shore and especially liked to spend time in Wildwood and Sea Isle. He felt at home walking the beaches and fishing in the ocean. As a young man Rich enjoyed hunting.. He was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, and was even a former season ticket holder. Rich also greatly enjoyed the music of Frank Sinatra. Due to the restrictions of COVID-19, viewing, Mass, and interment will be held privately. Contributions in Rich’s memory may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 980108, Washington DC, 20090. Condolences may be shared at www.earlefuneralhome.com *
