Elizabeth A. Cheeseman
July 24, 1931 - June 21, 2020
Elizabeth “Betty” Cheeseman, 88, of Wenonah, NJ passed away peacefully on Sunday June 21, 2020. Betty lived a very active and long life. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on July 24th, 1931. She grew up and attended elementary school and began high school in Essington, Pennsylvania. However, Betty’s parents (Edith and Joseph Garvey) relocated to Gloucester City, NJ when she was 15 years old. That is where she met her high school sweetheart and future husband, Robert James Cheeseman. In high school, Betty was a stellar athlete achieving “All State” status in both basketball and field hockey. After high school, she went on to Cooper Hospital’s Nursing Program and graduated with a degree as a Registered Nurse in 1951. Shortly after graduation, she married Robert (Bob) and they moved to Tennessee where he was stationed in the United States Air Force. While living in Tennessee they began their family with their first three children and Robert completed his master’s degree in Music and Education. Once the Korean War ended, they moved back to Gloucester City, NJ and completed their family with two more children. Betty worked as a Registered Nurse in critical care and intensive care units at numerous hospitals in South Jersey and Philadelphia for more than 55 years, while her husband, Bob taught music and marching band at Triton High School. She and her husband worked hard and were devoted to their family. They worked side-by-side with several other families to change Johnson Boulevard in Gloucester City from the swamp land it used to be to create the Gloucester City Swim Club, baseball fields, basketball courts and recreational areas where families could enjoy bringing their children. A few years after her husband passed away in 1976, she decided to sell her home and have a brand new one built in Wenonah, NJ, where she lived for 48 years. In her spare time, she loved to work in her yard on the landscape, walk her dogs and she loved her Philadelphia Eagles. She was a true animal lover having taken care of and rescuing numerous dogs and even a couple cats over the course of her lifetime. Betty is predeceased by her husband Robert and her son-in-law Thomas Beese. She is survived by her two sons and their spouses Robert (Elaine) Cheeseman, Barry (Pam) Cheeseman and three daughters, Connie Smith, Betty Beese and Belinda (Brian) Murphy; her thirteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A private funeral service will be held for the immediate family only. Due to the current COVID 19 regulations, masks and social distancing are required, and capacity restrictions will be followed. For those who wish to honor Betty, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Betty’s memory to the local ASPCA or local animal shelter. * * *
